After 4+ years of Teacher Education courses and various placements, I’m sure you find yourself using phrases like Common Core, response to intervention, and ESL in everyday conversation. But are you appropriately integrating them into your resume and especially your interview answers?
Whether you’re sitting down with a potential employer at a career fair or in a formal interview, it is imperative that you set yourself apart. One of the best ways to do that is by making connections between educational “lingo” (think key concepts in teaching) and what you are doing in the classroom. After a couple interviews you will realize there are “buzz words” in education, like differentiation or project-based learning, if you can make these words part of your lingo and utilize them when you answer interview questions, you have the potential to stand out to employers.
Q: Why is it important to know your students?
A: You can answer this question by bringing up the necessity for differentiation, integration of technology, or even the utilization of project-based assessments catered to student interests in order to keep them engaged.
Once you fit in these educational terms, make sure that you provide solid examples of how you actually apply them in the classroom. Give an example of a time that you were able to differentiate in your classroom because you paid attention to a specific student’s needs or when you were able to make your subject relatable because you knew the student loved basketball or dance.
By not only proving to the interviewer with evidence that you are knowledgeable of educational lingo and concepts, but also that you can actually apply them in your classroom, you are setting yourself above the rest and showcasing your undeniably marketable skill sets.
