A Message to those Interning Spring 2020

Dear Teacher Prep Interns:

The College of Education has been in contact with the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) which certifies and licenses teachers in Michigan.  The faculty and staff are working to ensure interns completing the teacher preparation program this semester will not have problems being certified to teach due to the closure of K-12 schools.  MSU’s teacher preparation program standards are much higher than what is required for certification and MDE is being flexible about how to demonstrate meeting the outcomes.

For more information from MDE visit https://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/Apprentice_Internship_Guidance_684239_7.pdf.

If you have questions regarding MSU’s internship requirements you can contact Kristy Dumont, Director of Student Affairs at kdumont@msu.edu.

Why I Teach

As you get settled into this challenging year of student teaching, it’s always important to remember why you gravitated toward the field in the first place. Was it to be a leader/expert in your subject area, to mentor and educate youth, to make a difference in the lives of underrepresented children? Whatever the reason, it’s important to recognize our successes and learn from others who are leaders in education.

Career Advising for Interns

Hello interns!

Just a friendly note that your career advisor, Pepa Casselman, will be on leave starting “any day now” until the end of February 2019. Don’t fret, though, there are plenty of ways to get career assistance while I’m gone.

For the remainder of Fall 2018 (till Dec. 7):

  • Make an appointment with a College of Education Career Peer Advisor or an All-Majors Advisor via Handshake.
  • Send your most updated resume and/or cover letter to COECareers@msu.edu for a quick critique. As a reminder, there are plenty of resources on this site, especially under the section called Professional Document Resources if you need help.

During winter break:

  • Very minimal career advising appointments will be offered during this time. Check Handshake for any options.
  • No quick resume critiques via email will be offered. If you email your document(s) to COECareers@msu.edu they will not be reviewed until the first week of classes in January.

For Spring 2019 (starting Monday, January 7):

  • Make an appointment with a College of Education Career Peer Advisor or an All-Majors Advisor via Handshake.
  • Send your most updated resume to COECareers@msu.edu for a quick critique.

Other Resources:

  • Use this site, including previous blog posts, for help with career-related topics such as professional documents, job searching, interviewing, career fairs, etc.
  • Search around the MSU Career Services web site for other helpful resources.
